LEPHALALE – Police are frustrated by an employment scam that claims people will be employed by Exxaro if they pay a substantial amount for a bogus medical examination.
Warrant officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale police says they have received nearly a dozen complaints from individuals claiming to have each paid a large amount of money in an attempt to secure a job at Exxaro. “We have established that a syndicate is targeting job seekers from all over SA and asks them to pay money into a bank account for medical examination fees.”
A source from Exxaro, who asked not to be identified, says they are aware of the scam and are investigating. “We have received information that the suspects use a white bakkie with a GP-registration when they are ‘recruiting’, but have not been able to apprehend the suspects yet.”
Big mining corporations will not ask anyone to pay for employment. If a mining corporation is interested in a candidate, it will invite them to participate in the interview process. “Should you be asked to deposit money in exchange for a job you should be suspicious as this is most probably a scam.”
