MOKOPANE – With drug use on the rise, structures need to be put in place to assist users in rehabilitating their lives. The DAAC Restoration Organisation assists in the fight against crime, drug abuse and violent crimes.
DAAC chairperson Fuzzy Kekana says that the organisation works to restore drug addicts’ lives and offer hope to less-fortunate children in our communities.
“We want to show the youth that regardless of their circumstances, they can still make something of their lives.”
Kekana says that drug and alcohol addiction is not the only risk children face as these addictions often leads to anxiety and depression.
“We have realized that there are a lot learners that drop out of school and use drugs, risking their very lives as they don't realise what these drugs actually are.”
Lives are at stake because rat poison is a known ingredient of nyaope, while ecstacy pills are often mixed with heroin or cocaine.
“We have support groups at our offices and have extended our outreach programmes to schools,” says Kekana.
“We also do presentations about the long- and short-term effects of peer pressure as well as  conflict-management, domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, financial abuse and bullying.”
DAAC has taken 50 drug addicts to a rehabilitation centre in the Cullinan area in Gauteng for treatment.
“Better Best College is providing us with skills development programmes for rehabilitated drug addicts,” he explains.
On 30 September, DAAC will host a Sports Against Drug and Crime Awareness Campaign at the Mosesetjane Sports Grounds.
