MOKOPANE – Mokopane Destiny Academy (MDA) will not only move into a brand-new 1012m² building in 2016, but it will also introduce the well-respected Cambridge international qualification. This will make it the only private school in the Mokopane-area to offer this sought-after curriculum.
School principal, Fred van der Merwe says that MDA was founded in 2006 with 14 learners. The school, currently situated in Schoeman Street, has 74 learners. “The new building, situated at the RET Centre on the corner of Geyser and Fourie Streets, will allow for 180 learners, allowing the school to expand threefold over the next few years.”
The new school will offer education for Grade 1 to 12 learners and will boast a computer room, library and even a science laboratory. With ten qualified teachers the ratio between children and educators will remain favourable (1:8), says Van der Merwe. “We really want to make a difference in the lives of our learners and allow them to have secure futures.”
“Cambridge qualifications have a proven reputation for being an excellent preparation for university, employment and life beyond,” says Cambridge International Examinations’ Mark Barber, senior schools development manager for Sub-Saharan Africa on the Cambridge web site. There are some 12 000 schools globally and more than 100 schools in SA.
Cambridge IGSCE and Cambridge International AS and A-Level are recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide as evidence of academic ability.
“As a school which follows Christian values, we will continue to work hand-in-hand with parents to enable children to make a difference in their community,” says VD Merwe. “We are teaching these children how to live and not only how to make a living.”
The school will also offer sports, including soccer and gymnastics, to ensure well-rounded learners.
“To have our own school here at the RET Centre is a dream years in the making,” says Destiny Alive Ministries’ Pastor Thomas Marshall who assisted in the planning, design and construction of the new building.
“This is only phase one, plans are already under way to expand even further in the future and to continue investing in the youth of this town.”
