MAHWELERENG – After millions was spent on a luxurious 4-hectare sports node in Mahwelereng, it has been left to fall to ruin after it was allegedly targeted by vandals due to a lack of security.
The once-impressive public facility that forms part of an existing sports node, including a recreational park, outdoor gym, baseball park, 2 500-seat amphitheater and a water spray park (supported by a 500kl elevated steel water tank). It is currently not functioning and has been locked behind concrete palisades for some time. A visit to the property proved that the facility is not being maintained and tall grass and weeds is visible leaving taxpayers furious.
The node was funded by the neigh-
borhood development grant and was intended as a safe, secure environment and entertaining facility for the public.
The outdoor gym was popular as the public apparently queued from early mornings to take advantage of this facility.
Sadly, it was only in use for about two years after it was constructed between 2011/2012 and is now also left abandoned. The library next to the park is still open.
The Mogalakwena Municipality’s head of communications Malesela Selokela, was approached for answers as to what went wrong.
At time of going to print Northern News, however, received no comment from the concerned department.
