SELEKA – About 39 donkeys were shot next to the road between Seleka and Shongoane by an unknown person.
Lephalale police spokesperson warrant officer Frans Mokoena says a case of malicious damage to property and animal cruelty was opened at the Villa Nora police station. “At this stage we don’t know who is responsible for killing these animals, but would like to warn owners to keep their livestock in properly fenced off areas to prevent them from straying onto the road.”
Mokoena stated that the reason for the shooting might be the perceived danger that the animals pose to motorists. “Last month we had an similar incident where ten cattle were shot; eight of these cattle died while two were severely injured.”
Meanwhile, the Lephalale SPCA have confirmed that they are also busy investigating the shootings. “In addition to the incidents in Seleka, we are also investigating a case where five donkeys were shot in Steenbokpan last month. Two of the donkeys survived,” said Sonika Oosthuizen, inspector at the Lephalale SPCA.
Anybody with any information about the shootings are urged to contact the Lephalale
police or the Lephalale SPCA.
