Municipality and strikers meet

While municipal manager, Markus Mthombeni, has arranged for private contractors to assist, taxpayers are bearing the brunt of the employee’s actions. In many areas, the three-week build-up of refuse bags have been torn open and garbage are scattered on sidewalks.
DA councilors Korny Dekker and Yolande Coetzee took it upon themselves to report problems where possible and personally assisted in filling up potholes in town.
Workers cite inadequate benchmarking of salaries compared to similar-sized municipalities as the reason for the strike action. The workers include members from both the South African municipal workers union and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU).
