Police had to rescue a self-confessed accomplice of a gang of house robbers when mob of angry residents of Mozombana next to Platreef mine got hold of him om Wednesday.
The 32-year-old from Mahwelereng admitted to police that he was part of a gang of four that overpowered and man-handled a housekeeper while her employer was at work. She was robbed of two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash was removed from the house.
When the three fled the scene she raised alarm and contacted her employer, a Mahwelereng police constable. Residents quickly apprehended the fourth member of the group who did not enter the house, but waited outside. He claimed he didn't go in as he knew the owner of the house as well as the housekeeper, says Mahwelereng police spokesperson, constable Sello Leso. "By the time our member, the owner of the house, got there, the crowd had already severly beaten the suspect," he said.
The owner managed to "rescue" the suspected robber from the crowd and took him into the house from where police had to sneak him out through the back door as the crowd refused to dispurse and demanded he be handed over to them for further "punishment".
Leso says the man, now in custody, shared the names and addresses of his accomplices with the police. "We hope to arrest them shortly."
