MOKOPANE – The South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) in Mahwelereng celebrated June 16 in honour of students who participated in Soweto uprising in 1976. The commemoration was set to celebrate achievements of young people and highlight responsibilities of today’s generation, said Dr Abdul Nigel of Lead SA.
“The future of this country remain in the hands of young people. They are the light to guide us into prosperity, but for them to be able to understand what responsibilities need to be taken, they should be mentored and trained to be capable to become desired leaders,” continued Dr. Nigel.
SARCS launched a Youth Leadership Programme designed to facilitate leadership skills and knowledge.
Nhlanhla Lekalala, a regional director of Moral Re-generation Movement said the event was created to motivate the youth to make informed decisions. “Youth should understand that they are a future of this country. Youth of ’76 opened many doors and youth of today should take advantage of such opportunities,” he said.
Love Life Mahwelereng and Gundo Praise and Worship church also celebrated with a Youth conference in Sekgakgapheng. “This event highlighted goals and tools youth should familiarize themselves with in order to achieve their dreams,” said Lekalala. Gundo Praise and Prayer Church hosted the conference for the fourth time. The event was a success and valuable information was given, said Shaun Mkhonazi of the church.
