MOGALAKWENA – Mogalakwena’s sewage treatment plant is overflowing as its pumps have broken down months ago.
According to Valerie Byliefeldt, who identifies herself as the newly-appointed provincial representative for the re-registered National Conservative Party, a concerned resident approached her with photo’s of the sewage plant. The resident claims that the Mogalakwena Municipality is well aware of the crisis, but that nothing is being done due to budget constraints.
The Mogalakwena Municipality replied to Northern News saying that the photos, which was also published on social media, indicated a scum formation and overflow from the manhole. While the municipality apologised to affected residents, it added that the cause of the problem is damaged electrical components of the Motor Control Centre. It stated that its electrical department is dealing with the problem. The damage, the municipality says, has caused one of the three aerators and a sludge pump not to be functional. “With what is functional, the treatment process can still continue,” says Malesela Selokela, divisional head of communications at the municipality.
He says that the sewage overflow is cleaned frequently and added that the municipality is now waiting for its electrical department and a service provider to get to the site for the repairs.
In the meanwhile, the municipality says they will manage the water supply with low pressure until they replace aqua lock nuts which were broken while doing site maintenance. The parts was expected to be delivered this week.
