LEPHALALE – Most political parties praised the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for their conduct during the municipal elections last week.
“We opened no criminal cases resulting from the election and only received a few minor complaints that do not fall under the police’s jurisdiction and were referred to the IEC for investigation,” said warrant officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale police.
Most of the voting stations in Lephalale area were well attended by eager voters resulting in the African National Congress (ANC) securing 17 seats in the municipal council, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) secured five seats and the Democratic Alliance (DA) secured four seats.
The smaller parties did not perform very well  and the Congress of the People (COPE), Pan African Congress and the Vryheidsfront Plus (VF+) did not manage to win any seats on the Lephalale municipal council.
In the Mogalakwena municipality, the ANC secured 41 seats, while the EFF secured 13 seats and the DA secured six seats. The VF+, Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA), Azania People’s Organization (APO) and COPE secured one seat each. Out of the 32 wards, the ANC won 30, while the DA retained two.
Meanwhile Afriforum said in a press statement on Monday that voters sent a very clear message about poor governance and poor service delivery when they drew their crosses at the ballot box.
“Municipal councils will now have to heed these and address the myriad of service delivery issues on local government level.”
