MOKOPANE - Several armed suspects tried to hijack an cash-in-transit vehicle near the Choppies Shopping Centre this morning (Saturday 1 April). Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe says that the Joint Special Operations Units, composed of several police units, worked together to foil the cash-in-transit robbery.
He says that members of the community spotted the armed suspects and tipped off the Mokopane police. "We reacted swiftly and upon arrival, we pulled over a white Ford Ranger and then a short out ensued between the police and the suspects."
He confirmed that two suspects were killed and one seriously injured. Two more suspects were arrested without injuries and will appear in the Mokopane Magistrates Court on Monday.
The suspects were all between the ages of 26 and 44 and have all been identified. Police recovered a R5-rifle, two 9mm pistols and a Ford Ranger which had been hijacked in Westernburg outside Polokwane.
"The origin of all the firearms is under investigation," says Ngoepe.
Limpopo Commissioner Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba commended the police for their quick action. He warned all criminals that their days are numbered and that they should refrain from committing any criminal acts.
