MOKOPANE - On Monday Democratic Alliance national spokesperson, Lindiwe Mazibuko, handed over a Memorandum and Petition with about 1 000 signatures to Mogalakwena Municipality. The Memorandum contains a number of community’s grievances over lack of service delivery in Ward 31, extensions 14, 19 and 20. The contentious issues are about lack of electricity, water, sanitation and road infrastructure.
The Memorandum was received on behalf of the Mayor by the member of the executive committee and head of the portfolio committee on finance, Abram Kgaphola. “It What is disturbing to us is that when he received our memo he seemed to suggest that there are no major service delivery issues affecting these communities. By saying this, he showed utter callousness and disregard for the plight of these communities,” Mazibuko commented afterwards. Yet the people in these communities have to constantly live next to leaking sewages, at great risk to their health.”
Extensions 19 and 20 have been in existence for some three years, but still don’t have water and electricity. Some of the houses have toilet infrastructure which do not work because there is no running water and there are no street lights.
“The last time we handed over a memo was in November 2010 and it was completely ignored. We hope that this new Council will attend to community’s grievances,” Mazibuko said.
