After three successive years, Matimba power station has again been presented the award for “Best Power Station in SA”. This award is presented after each financial year at the Chairman’s Awards function.
The trophy sees Eskom recognise the station that has performed in an exemplary manner. This does not necessarily mean the best performer. It could be a station that has implemented a turnaround strategy or one that has come through a difficult period but exhibited courage and high morale. This is a role model to other stations.
Matimba is the current record holder of the most JH Smith awards in the history of Eskom. They won in the following years: 2000 (Peaking Generation Matimba) share winner , 2005/06 (Matimba/Duvha) share winner, 2006/07 (Matimba), 2007/08 (Matimba) and 2010/11 (Matimba).
“There are a variety of things that are taken into account when choosing which power station deserves this award. The financial management of the station, technical management where they take into account how much production goes on without interruption, human resource management, environmental compliance and management and the plant reliability,” said Matimba power station manager Gershen Bonga.
