MOKOPANE - Mokopane Primary was represented by eight students at the School’s League Artistic Gymnastics Competition in Polokwane last weekend.
The School’s League Competition forms part of the South African Gymnastics Federation’s (SAGF) schools programme. Its purpose is to provide every school going child with access to sport. Gymnastics prepares children for successful participation in all sports and helps develop motor, cognitive, and foundational physical literacy skills as well as precision and discipline.
The team from Mokopane Primary did just that and started training in May this year. Training sessions take place in their school hall. Almost 40 students in Mokopane Primary participate in these training sessions where they are assisted by Merene van Zyl from Marshall Gymnastics Academy (MGA). Benches are used as beams, and chairs and tables as parallel and uneven bars. As preparation for the Limpopo competition, it was arranged that the selected team attend MGA for a few training sessions.
Keitumetse Mokgotho, Basetsana Langa, Jay-Lee Booysen, Lerato Madiba, Khutso Ledwaba, Thapelo Malete, Kamogelo Chokoe, and Lucky Khoda showed their grit by beating the odds even though they only had limited training time on required equipment. If chosen as part of the Limpopo team, they will be heading to Pretoria at the end of the year to participate in the SA’s Schools Championships.
Mokopane Primary need the following equipment to help them develop in their gymnastic training: matrasses to put under apparatus, long benches, mini trampolines, portable carpets for floor work, general gym equipment (cones, bean bags, skipping ropes, etc.).
