There has been a lot of speculation about whether the Waterberg and especially Lephalale will indeed become SA’s next energy hub. Even the future growth of Steenbokpan, a small farming community west of Lephalale, is being debated. In a recent article in Business Day, columnist David Gleason wrote that “Sasol relinquished a fat opportunity” when it decided not to go ahead with the Mafutha project, a proposed coal-to-liquid plant near Steenbokpan. “Without Mafutha, it is unlikely that the large, land-locked coal reserve of the Waterberg will ever be used. The Mafutha Project has been allowed to wither,” he wrote. Valerie Cilliers takes a look at the impact of Sasol's decision on the area's economy.
