Minister roots for game farming

News: 04 July 2013
The mere ownership of land does not automatically translate into wealth and game farms aren’t mere playgrounds for the [wealthy] that don’t contribute to SA’s economy. Perceptions like these over-simplify the sensitive land- and poverty debate in South Africa and should be changed, dr. Pieter Mulder, deputy minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, said at a public meeting this week.

Lephalale and Steenbokpan: A tale of two cities?

News: 04 July 2013 By Valerie Cilliers
There has been a lot of speculation about whether the Waterberg and especially Lephalale will indeed become SA’s next energy hub. Even the future growth of Steenbokpan, a small farming community west of Lephalale, is being debated. In a recent article in Business Day, columnist David Gleason wrote that “Sasol relinquished a fat opportunity” when it decided not to go ahead with the Mafutha project, a proposed coal-to-liquid plant near Steenbokpan. “Without Mafutha, it is unlikely that the large, land-locked coal reserve of the Waterberg will ever be used. The Mafutha Project has been allowed to wither,” he wrote. Valerie Cilliers takes a look at the impact of Sasol's decision on the area's economy.

Will Mojela be reinstated as Mayor?

News: 04 July 2013
Flyers inviting the community of Lephalale to celebrate the reinstatement of Councillor Johanna Mojela as the Mayor of Lephalale, was handed out to community members at taxi ranks in Lephalale on Monday. Mojela was removed from the office of the Mayor in April last year when she was accused of not attending council meetings and not signing the appointment letter of municipal manager, Bob Naidoo when he was appointed by council earlier that year. The flyer invites all citizens of Lephalale to a “mayoral celebration” event at the Oasis lodge at 15:00 on Saturday (transport provided). Although Mojela told Northern News that she knows nothing about the event, Joyce Phasha – whose name and number appears on the flyer - was adamant this week that the event will go ahead and that the matter of Mojela’s reinstatement will be discussed there. Sello Lediga, spokesperson for the ANC provincial task team told Northern News this week that the ANC has not decided to make any changes to the local leadership including the position of Mayor in Lephalale. “We suspect that the event was organised by people who are doing their own thing.” The current Mayor, Jack Maeko, could not be reached for comment.
