Grootgeluk Strike Ends

The strike at Exxaro's Grootegeluk mine just outside Lephalale ended over the weekend when an agreement was reached between Exxaro and the National Union of Minewor-kers (NUM). Striking workers returned to the mine on Monday.

Lephalale municipality seeks divine guidance

Employees of the Lephalale municipality took time out on Tuesday to pray for what municipal manager, Bob Naidoo, calls serious challenges facing the municipality. The prayer meeting was led by Pastor Willem Papo from the Living Letters ministry, who called on councilors and employees to trust in God. The meeting was also attended by the mayor, Jack Maeko.

The Limpopo department of roads and transport’s announced that it will show no mercy to traffic law violators during Easter. “SA is part of the “decade of action for road safety” which was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly with the aim to reduce road deaths by 50% by 2020,” the department’s spokesperson Joshua Kwapa said. “Limpopo needs to play a meaningful part and contribute to achieving this target.” During Easter last year 23 people died on Limpopo roads. This year’s Easter Arrive Alive campaign will focus on road safety management, safer roads, vehicle safety, safer road users and post-crash response.

15 year sentence for house robbers

Two Zimbabwean nationals were each sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after they were found guilty on charges of house robbery in the Mokopane Regional Court last week. The court heard how Malvas Makonese (22) and Big Dora Mabika (29) along with another suspect entered the house of a local resident, tied him up and threatened to stab him with a knife while demanding cash.

A long walk to Limpopo

Two Limpopo men, one on crutches, have walked from Johannesburg to Polokwane to raise funds for blood donation and the rights of the disabled respectively. Motinki Mahlo and Thabo Mogale left Johannesburg’s Park station on their 400km journey on 17 March. Mogale is disabled and walks with crutches. They reached Mokopane on Friday morning and Polokwane later in the afternoon. Mahlo says his life was saved by a blood transfusion 22 years ago.
