This past weekend saw cyclists of all ages participate in the second Debtsafe CANSA MTB Challenge, which took place at the National Zoological Gardens Mokopane. This year’s Challenge proved to be the most successful event yet, with an overwhelming response seen from the community and riders.
Hein du Plessis, race organiser, says that the growth of the Challenge over the past two years has been exceptional. “This year, we received a massive 353 entries, and each year this number rises. We are definitely looking forward to seeing the race grow even more in the future, especially when considering that mountain biking is SA’s fastest growing sport. The event really helps in creating the ideal platform to spread vital awareness in the support of CANSA.”
“Perhaps the most exciting development of all is that the Challenge is now a Cycling SA sanctioned qualifier for Limpopo Colours (30km and 60km). Furthermore, as of this year, a 1km distance race was also added to the Challenge as an alternative to the scooter race and 10km race meaning that kids can also now participate,” continues du Plessis.
With the Challenge being more family-orientated this year, it was no surprise that each participant gave it their best shot across more challenging terrains, longer stretches and climbs across the four respective distance options of 1km, 10km, 30km and 60km. “A variety of food and craft stalls, as well as an iPad and Mountain Bike raffle added to the ‘family experience’ the day had to offer,” adds du Plessis.
In spite of this year’s course being the most challenging yet, a number of cyclists excelled and stood out from the crowd going on to take the top positions in this year’s Challenge. “We look forward to next year’s event taking place on 10 October 2015,  and we have already started discussing how to further improve and add to the excitement of the experience in years to come,” du Plessis concludes.
