MOKOPANE – Two talented fencers, Eben Wagner and Andrew Howitt of the Eresabel Fencing Club in Mokopane, will be traveling to Bourges, France, soon where both will compete in the upcoming 2016 Cadet and Junior World Fencing Championships.
Howitt has also been selected to participate in the Senior African Championships in Algeria that will be held shortly after the junior championships.
For the 15-year-old Wagner it is a first time to qualify in both epee and foil. This young fencer will compete against u/17’s at the Cadet and Junior World Fencing Championships. Howitt (19) will join Wagner on junior level with sabre and epee followed by strict competition on senior level at the Senior World Fencing Championships.
Eresabel club, established in 1996, has an astonishing record which has been sustained over the years. Lizette Gordon became the club’s first King Protea in 1999 and ever since, the club has had a top fencer representing SA on numerous occasions. Gordon was a RSA representative fort three times followed by Rona Schröder who also represented the country for three years. Emil Schröder followed four times and Andrew Howitt proudly represented RSA for five years.
The government however only finances selected participation internationally. A plea for financial sponsorship is requested, as parents and the club does not have sufficient funds for both fencers. Readers who want to reach out to them can contact Mark Howitt at 082 496 1800 or Frik Wagner at
072 905 8504.
