MOKOPANE - Joseph Chauke (23) is a young runner from a Extension 20, a disadvantaged community within Mokopane, who is working hard to achieve his goal of becoming a professional athlete.
Chauke finished second in this year’s BMW 10km race in Polokwane despite facing a lack of resources and professional training. A talented runner, Chauke feels isolated in his community and often can’t participate in competitions due to a lack of transport, the proper gear and sponsorship. “I work as a gardener, and sometimes I’m unable to attend competitions, because my job is what puts bread on the table”.
He is supported by Bafana Biyela and Patrick Seabela who mentor, train and help him register and participate in marathons where possible.
While Chauke comes from a poor community known for its high rate of criminal activities, he believes that the youth should rather turn to sport. He says that sport can provide a healthy outlet for frustrations and says that he would like to influence others to join him during his training sessions. He trains from Monday to Thursday, running for 20km twice a day.
